Jayhawks Have Won Six Straight Heading Into Weekend

BINGHAMTON — Call them the cardiac kids, call them the comeback kids, just don’t call the Jamestown Community College baseball team defeated as it came back to defeat SUNY Broome twice in 4-2 and 9-7 Region 3 Division III victories Thursday.

The Jayhawks jumped out to an early lead on Broome in Game 1, with a Tim Beimel single to left that scored Mitchell McKinney to put Jamestown CC up 1-0.

That advantage held until the fifth, when the Hornets brought home a pair to claim a 2-1 edge.

The 2-1 score stayed into the top of the seventh, where Beimel doubled to left, driving in Timothy Johnson and Harley Hoag. A Broome error on the play allowed Beimel to round the bases and put Jamestown up 4-2.

Lucas Marsh pitched the final two innings for the win.

Troy Moussette got the start, allowing just one earned run over five strong innings.

The win made it five straight for Jamestown CC heading into Game 2 of the doubleheader.

In Game 2, it was more of the same, with Jamestown CC jumping out to a 4-0 lead. The RBIs came from McKinney, Marsh and Beimel in the second and third innings.

Broome had a counterpunch, scoring the next seven runs to take command at 7-4 heading to the final frame.

That’s where Jamestown CC once again put on the rally cap. Johnson drove in De’Sean Rogers before Beimel knocked home Haryley Hoag, and Jamestown CC had the deficit down to one with runners on the corners. Beimel and Johnson wouldn’t be on first and third for long, with McKinney getting a base knock to left to score two Jayhawks and give Jamestown CC the 8-7 lead. Hayden Hoag smacked a line drive to right to score McKinney for the final total of 9-7.

Five Jayhawks pitched in the game, with Kodi Colton getting credit for the win.

Jamestown CC has now won six straight as it gets ready to play Genesee CC four straight games, with two in Batavia on Saturday and two at Diethrick Park on Sunday.

TUESDAY

It was a perfect afternoon for baseball at Diethrick Park on Tuesday, and Jamestown Community College took full advantage as the Jayhawks swept Corning CC 13-7 and 10-0 in a Region 3 Division III doubleheader.

Corning CC took an early lead in the top half of the first, but the Jayhawks bats silenced any noise from the visiting dugout in the bottom of the frame, putting up seven runs. Mitchell McKinney got things started with an RBI double to even the score at 1-1. He was followed by a two-run single from Tim Beimel and an RBI double from Lucas Marsh, and just like that, the score was 4-1. The Jayhawks were aided by a few Corning errors later in the inning to finish with a 7-1 lead.

It was a pair of sacrifice flies in the third and fourth by Beimel and De’Sean Rogers, pushing the advantage to eight runs at 9-1.

Corning CC closed the game to 9-5, but the Jayhawks had an answer with another Marsh RBI followed by an error plating another run to make it 12-5.

Rogers would drive in a run in the sixth for the final Jamestown CC total of 13.

Corning CC pushed a pair across in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough as Jamestown CC took home Game 1 13-7.

In Game 2, it was all about Beimel on the bump. The sophomore took the ball and went six strong innings, allowing zero runs with six strikeouts and scattering four hits in the 10-0 victory. Jamestown CC drove home three runs in the first inning. Harley Hoag got things started with a sacrifice fly, Beimel helped himself with another sacrifice fly and Marsh finished off the scoring with a single to bring in McKinney.

The score stayed 3-0 until the fourth, where it was singles across the board for Marsh, Jax Arcuri and Rogers driving in runs to grow the lead to 7-0.

Arcuri, Rogers and Beimel would each add another RBI to their ledger before the game ended with the final score of 10-0.

SUNDAY

Jamestown CC baseball put up a pair of Region 3 Division III shutouts against the SUNY Broome Hornets on a chilly spring afternoon Sunday at Diethrick Park.

The Jayhawks took home Game 1 7-0 behind the right arm of De’Sean Rogers. The sophomore threw a complete game with three strikeouts. He received help from the plate early and often. In the first, Mitchell McKinney drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Jamestown CC would plate three more runs in the third inning, most of the damage on a two-run double from Tim Beimel. The 4-0 advantage swelled to 7-0 in the fourth, with Rogers, Timothy Johnson and McKinney all crossing the plate. That was all the scoring in the first half of the twinbill, with Jamestown CC securing the seven-run victory.

It was more of the same on the hill in Game 2. Dylan Kinney, a freshman for the Jayhawks, tossed his own seven-inning complete-game shutout in a 4-0 win.

Jamestown CC took the lead in the first inning off of an RBI from McKinney, who knocked in Johnson for the game’s first run. Jamestown CC added to it in the second after Lucas Marsh tripled and Bradley Babcock drove him home for a 2-0 edge. Jamestown would score a run in each of the fourth and sixth innings, with Jax Arcuri earning an RBI, and Marsh later scoring for the 4-0 final.
