Frewsburg To Present ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ This Weekend

FREWSBURG — The Frewsburg Bear Players are preparing to offer their high school musical with a “bang” this year.

The production’s cast and crew will present “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” at the Frewsburg High School auditorium Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The performances will include several songs that appeared in the 1968 Dick Van Dyke film of the same name, which itself was based on a novel written in 1964 by James Bond creator Ian Fleming.

“Many of us have grown up with ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,’ which features so many great songs,” said Shaun Laska, the Bear Players’ artistic director. “Adults and children alike will be fascinated by ‘Chitty’ herself, as she drives around the stage and uses her ‘magic’ to save her family time and time again.”

The family-friendly musical centers on the adventures of widowed inventor Caractacus Potts and his two children, Jeremy and Jemima, as they restore an old, dilapidated race car only to discover it has magical properties including the ability to float on water and fly. The music was written by brothers Robert and Richard Sherman, who are perhaps best-known for their songs which appeared in many Disney films including “The Jungle Book” and “Mary Poppins.”

The family teams up with candy heiress Truly Scrumptious and the eccentric Grandpa Potts to keep “Chitty” from the hands of the evil Baron and Baroness Bomburst and rescue the children of Vulgaria from the menacing Childcatcher. Comic relief is provided by the antics of the bumbling Vulgarian spies, Boris and Goran, as they aid the Baron in his quest to capture “Chitty.”

For this production, the Bear Players rented several set pieces from a community theater in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada, that had previously staged “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” including a fully-functional “Chitty” car. Laska said the production is also the first to be staged in the high school’s newly renovated auditorium.

“In addition to cosmetic improvements, we’ve added a number of technical upgrades that will aid us in our productions,” he said.

Tickets to a performance of “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” are $8, and can be purchased in advance by calling 569-7069 between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., or online at frewsburg.ticketleap.com/chitty.
