JPS Clarifies High School Students Can Wear American Flag

Rest assured that students at Jamestown High School can wear the American flag to school.

After a rumor circulated on Facebook stating students were told not to wear the American flag at a recent assembly, the principal wanted to set the record straight. Mike McElrath said the Facebook post regarding the school dress code policy was incorrect.

“The JHS principals hold individual class meetings with the entire student body,” McElrath said via a Facebook post on the district’s page. “At all of the meetings, dress code is discussed and that in addition to not allowing clothes that promote drugs, alcohol or violence, students are asked to refrain from wearing any clothing that could be deemed offensive to others. Examples were given of clothing that could be deemed offensive to others, including the confederate flag.”

The post originated from Wayne Reichenbach, who stated that the principal informed students “the new school policy is no American flags can be worn on students’ clothing due to the fact it can be seen as offensive.” Reichenbach originally called for a protest. However, Reichenbach recently posted an update stating his original post was incorrect.

“Well, we found out from the student the school is banning the confederate flag,” he wrote. “Not the flag of the United States. The info I was reciting was that it was the U.S. flag. I am sorry to cause such a hassle for the Jamestown High School. Sorry for the confusion.”
