Barcelona Harbor Break Wall Still In Disrepair
WESTFIELD — More and more debris continues to wash in through the chasm in the Barcelona Harbor break wall.
A year ago, in February of 2016 the federal government granted upwards of $650,000 in emergency funds for the Army Corps of Engineers to fix the break, however, it is still not fixed. The Corps worked on the problem this Fall but to no avail.
A large barge with equipment is now in the harbor, waiting for an opportunity to get back to work on the repair. According to Town Supervisor, Martha Bills, funds have been secured, however the weather has not been cooperative in getting the work done.
A storm in October 2015 caused the Lake Erie waters to wash out a section of the wall. The break wall protects the federal channel which allows boats to port. The protected harbor and break wall also provides a spot for fishing and recreation. The Barcelona Harbor is deemed a Harbor of Refuge and maintained by the federal Army Corps of Engineers.
