14-Year-Old Amish Boy Dies In Cart Accident

CONEWANGO–A 14-year-old Amish male from Conewango died Friday morning after reportedly being run over by a horse-drawn cart.

The victim, identified as Neil E. I. Raber, was believed to be using the cart to pull a log downhill in a wooded area off Stoddard and Northeast roads in the hamlet of Conewango Valley.

According to Howie VanRensselaer, Cattaraugus County coroner, Raber fell to the ground shortly before 9 a.m. when his cart hit an unknown object. He was reportedly “crushed” when his two horses pulling the cart trampled him, VanRensselaer said.

Raber was pronounced dead at the scene. VanRensselaer said Raber was in the woods with his father when the accident occurred.

VanRensselaer was assisted at the scene by Dr. Brian Walters, director of emergency services for Cattaraugus County.
