Assault Rifle, Throwing Stars, Fireworks Discovered After Saturday Crash

A car crash Saturday morning in the town of Ellery has led to a host of charges for a Bemus Point man after police found an assault weapon with ammunition, fireworks and throwing stars in his vehicle.

Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies responded shortly before 2 a.m. on Route 380 in the area of Pickard Road for a vehicle that had struck a utility pole. While looking inside the unoccupied vehicle through smashed-out windows, sheriff’s deputies observed an assault rifle with numerous loaded magazine, a sawed off shotgun, commercial and homemade fireworks and throwing stars.

Deputies also discovered numerous rounds of ammunition.

An investigation led to 29-year-old Michael J. Thompson at a near-by residence of the crash.He was taken into custody and arraigned in Ellery Town Court where bail was set at $75,000 cash, $150,000 property.

Thompson was charged with two separate counts of criminal possession of a weapon, possession of an assault weapon with large capacity ammunition feeding device, possession of a weapon for the throwing stars and unlawful possession of fireworks.

Thompson also faces charges of driving while intoxicated and DWI-per se.

Sheriff’s deputies said the investigation into Saturday’s crash is ongoing.
