Vintage Boats Set Sail For Chautauqua Lake
CELORON – No other event celebrates the rich boating heritage of Chautauqua Lake better than the Antique and Classic Boat Show in Celoron.
For the past 18 years, boaters from around the country have converged at the county’s signature lake to set sail and admire some of the rarest and most exotic of vessels.
Now, the Chautauqua Lake Twin Tier Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society Inc. will host its 19th annual show Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Holiday Harbor Marina, located at 19 Avon Ave., in Celoron.
William Reynolds III, chapter president, said though he expects many out-of-towners to show up, he hopes local boaters, many of whom have rare, antique and even old fiberglass boats, to participate.
“One of the things that’s integral to growing the chapter and the show is to encourage Chautauqua Lake boaters, people who’ve had these boats in their families for generations, to come to the show,” Reynolds said. “We’ve seen their boats on the lake, so we’d like them to come down and show people what the lake has to offer because we have such a rich boating heritage here at Chautauqua Lake.”
While judging will be part of the show, Reynolds said he prefers to call the event a “sponsorship award show” as opposed to a “judge show,” since the Antique and Classic Boat Society will not be judging.
“We will be presenting Sponsor Awards for different categories,” Reynolds said. “So there’s no pressure to show your boat, just come and enjoy the day and the events planned.”
On Saturday, registration will be from 7:30-10 a.m.
Public viewing of boats will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
At 2 p.m., captains and skippers will “start their engines” to show off their sound.
A restoration hour cocktail party will be from 6-7 p.m., and an awards dinner – catered by Wells Hog Wild BBQ – will be at 7 p.m. A $30 ticket is required to attend the banquet.
Also on Saturday, The Summer Wind, a 130-passenger yacht-type cruise, will depart from Celoron’s Lucille Ball Memorial Park dock at 6:30 p.m. and return at 8:30 p.m. There will be a cash bar aboard the boat with complimentary hors d’oeuvres served. A $15 ticket is required to participate.

The Twin Tier chapter is the 54th ACBS chapter in the world, was granted a charter in January 2007 and since then has been hosting the boat show. Prior to that, the North Coast Ohio ACBS chapter hosted the Chautauqua Lake show.
Classic and antique boats come with three different classifications based on year and six based on boat type. Boats made prior to 1919 are classified as historic. Pre-war classics are between 1919-42 and post-war classics are 1943-76. Within those classifications, the boats are labeled as “utility,” “runabout,” “sail,” “outboard,” “fiberclassics” and “nonpowered.”
