Trolley, Steamboats History Books Reprinted
Due to popular demand, two local history books have been reprinted.
Barbara Berry’s Bookshop has reprinted ”Trolleys of Jamestown and Chautauqua Lake – A New Look” and ”Chautauqua Lake Steamboats” in cooperation with the Fenton Historical Society. Warren Berry, owner of Barbara Berry’s Bookshop with his wife, Barbara, said the reprinting of the history books was done because they were popular and had sold out over time.
“This is part of our business plan at Barbara Berry’s Bookshop. We try to reprint books that are out of print, but still of interest and in-demand,” he said. “Those two books you might be able to find online at a much higher price than you would have to pay if they were newly reprinted. In short, go on eBay and you could find them for $30 or $40. Reprinted locally, they are much less than that.”
Berry said between 500 and 750 copies of each history book was reprinted. He said the rights to publish the books belong to the Fenton History Museum, but they don’t have the extra funds to pay for the reprinting of the books.
“My wife and I we go for the long term to get the money back,” he said. “Frankly, we don’t care if we get the money back we’re just happy to see them in print. So we underwrote the costs of the reprinting rather than have the Fenton have the burden of the costs.”
The trolleys book was written by local historian Helen Ebersole. Berry said he believes this is the third time the book has been reprinted, with the original printing done in 1998. The book is 40 pages with black and white pictures, which are newly enhanced by Falconer Printing & Design.
Berry didn’t know the exact date of the original publishing of the steamboats book, but said it was more than 20 years ago. He said the Fenton History Society is considered the author. Chautauqua Lake Steamboats is 32 pages in length, which includes photos of the boats that traveled on Chautauqua Lake and steamboat landings.
Both books are softcover. Berry said they are sold at the Fenton History Center in Jamestown; Chautauqua County Historical Society in Westfield; the Chautauqua Bookstore at the Chautauqua Institution; The Gateway Center in Jamestown; Lawson Center in Bemus Point; the Bridgeview One Stop in Bemus Point; the Bemus Point Library; Hogan’s Hut in Stow; Off The Beaten Path in Lakewood; the Ashville Library; Sumothis N Sumothat in Lakewood; The Kind Thrifter in Jamestown; The Basket Company in Jamestown; Novel Destinations in Jamestown; and the Fluvanna Library.
