A Fourth of July fireworks display will take place at Lakeside Park in Mayville.

The committee that oversees the annual Independence Day festivities announced Tuesday that the display will begin at the park at 10 p.m. The park will be closed to visitors out of safety concerns.

“We feel that shooting them from the park over the lake gives more viewing opportunities for everyone,” the committee said in a message posted to Facebook. “You should be about to see them pretty much from anywhere on the north side of the lake. We ask that you follow New York state distancing guidelines. We are happy to be able to give everyone some sense of normalcy and to be able to celebrate are country’s birthday. Thank you for being patient with us.”

The annual parade that takes place in Mayville on the Fourth of July was already canceled due to the pandemic.

On June 3, the committee stated: “It is with heavy hearts that we have to cancel the July 4 parade and festivities at Mayville Lakeside Park this year. It was a very tough decision for the committee to make but we feel it is the right decision to make at this time.

“The committee is, however, still trying to have fireworks. We are working in conjunction with the village of Mayville, the town of Chautauqua, and Skylighters to develop and plan a display that is safe for spectators in regards to both fire safety and social distancing.

“More details will be announced when they become available.”
