MAYVILLE — Chautauqua County fire investigators remain at the scene of a fire that destroyed a village restaurant.

Firefighters were called to the Mayville Diner, 7 W. Chautauqua St., shortly before 10:30 p.m. on Monday after Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies spotted heavy smoke at the four corners in the village.

Volunteers from several departments were on scene into the early hours Tuesday dousing the property. By midnight, fire could still be seen periodically coming from the diner’s roof.

Fire investigators with the Sheriff’s Office were still on scene by midday Tuesday. The cause of the fire has not been released.

The area surrounding the diner was closed to traffic for several hours as firefighters tried to douse the blaze. Photographs and video posted to social media showed the building almost completely engulfed by flames.

Mayville firefighters were assisted by volunteers from Chautauqua, Dewittville, Hartfield, Sherman and Westfield. County EMS and the fire coordinators also responded.

Local residents expressed sadness over the loss of the diner.

“This is a sad day for all that have ever shared a meal at the diner and others that have worked there at some point in their lives,” one person wrote on Facebook.

Another said: “Very sad to see. Good work by the firefighters to contain the fire and not let it jump to the gas station next door.”

“Very sad. My favorite place to get breakfast,” said another.
