Leon Historical Society To Hold Pennyroyal Race Track Programs

LEON – The Leon Historical Society has received a grant from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr Arts and Culture Imitative administered by the Community Foundation of Buffalo to create a new exhibit about the Pennyroyal Racetrack.

The exhibit features more than 70 black and white photos with documentation of the racetrack’s past. The historical society will host four special presentations.

Programs include May 3, when the Leon Historical Society opens for the season from 11 a.m. to 3 pm. Saturdays through October. Pennyroyal Racetrack programs will be held at 2 p.m. May 10 and July 19. The May 10 presentation will focus on “‘Harness Racing, Sport of Farmers” while the July 19 program is titled “‘Race Cars – Jalopies to Hot Rods.” On Aug. 16, a noon presentation about the race track will be held during the Leon Town Picnic. The presentation is open to the public; those attending are asked to bring a dish to pass. The final presentation on Oct. 11 will focus on “‘Where Some NASCAR Drivers and Winners Actually Started – Driving to Fame.”

A video developed by Don Veith of Memories in Motion highlighting the history and memories of the Pennyroyal Racetrack is part of the exhibit.
