YMCA Offering Lifeguard Certification Courses To The Public
The Jamestown YMCA is offering waterfront lifeguard and lifeguard recertification classes to the public.
Participants will be taught techniques for Lifeguarding, Professional Rescuer CPR, First Aid, AED, and Preventing Disease Transmission. Upon successful completion of the course students will receive the American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding Certification.
Participants must be at least 15 years or older by the last day of class. They must also be able to establish the ability to swim 550 yards, swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10-pound object, and then swim 20 yards within 1 minute and 40 seconds. Additionally, individuals must demonstrate the ability to tread water for 2 minutes using only legs and retrieve multiple submerged objects.
The June class will start with it’s pretest on Friday, May 31, from 5 to 8 p.m. Classes will be held Saturdays and Sundays from June 1 through June 9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. For current lifeguards the ARC lifeguard re-certification is offered June 15 and June 16 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the class expected to be completed early Sunday. For current lifeguards who need to recertify their CPR-Pro (annually due to New York requirements) a CPR-Pro recertification will be held May 28 or June 5 from 5 to 9 p.m.
Registration is currently ongoing and can be completed at the YMCA or online at www.jamestownymca.org.
