Panama Celebrates National Senior Citizen’s Day

Members of the Harmony Senior Citizens and area communities participated in an array of events celebrating National Senior Citizen’s Day in Panama on Aug. 19. The day began with a “Seniors Live” Parade from Panama Central School to the Panama Methodist Church. The parade was led by the Color Guard from the Mayville VFW, followed by “Uncle Sam” (Bill Sweeney) and his companion, Peachie James, George Froman driving his 1929 Ford with the eldest Harmony Senior Citizen member, Willa May Rupczk, 98, and Cindy Miller, a member of the Harmony Senior Citizen in the rumble seat. Ed Trisket’s horses and wagon provided addition transportation for the Scarlett O’Hatters and other senior citizens. A single rose was presented to the individual riding on the horse and wagon by the Village Farm Shop. Other parade participants included a float and other community members. Ray Wood, Harmony Senior Citizen, filled the air with the sound of music at the four corners in Panama. Lunch was provided by the Ashville United Methodist Church for a small donation and held in the Panama United Methodist Church Dining Room. The movie “Rescued by Ruby” was played in the PUMC santuary. The Four Corners Ice Cream sold $2 cones, Frame Shop took senior pictures for $1 and the Family Night Pizza sold $1 coffee and donuts. After the movie, a pulled pork dinner was provided by the Panama Baptist Church. Roberta Karlson, Harmony Senior Citizen’s president who organized the events, thanked Pastor Steve Taylor for the use of the Panama United Methodist Church facilities and to Lisa for all the printing, advertisements, posters and cards.
