The October meeting of the Chautauqua Vegan Society will be held in a new location and will have a guest speaker.
The group will host Emilie Barnett of Barnett’s Mushrooms on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Jamestown SDA Church, 130 McDaniel Ave.
There will be a vegan potluck dinner. The cost per person will be $2 for those bringing a dish to share or $6 without a dish. All dishes should be free of all animal products, with no meat, fish, egg, dairy, etc.
The speaker will be Emilie Barnett. Mrs. Barnett and her husband Jim are longtime foragers who enjoy finding edible food out in nature. Their love of mushrooms led them to growing their own to eat. This summer they became certified to sell both farmed and foraged mushrooms. They developed an innovative way of farming mushrooms that uses no gluten products. Their business, Barnett’s Mushrooms, offers a variety of commercial fungi including lions mane, freckled chestnuts, pioppinos, enoki, and a several kinds of oysters. They have also cloned three wild varieties to add to their library of mushrooms: bears head tooth, spring oysters, and summer oysters. Foraged mushrooms depend on the seasons.
