Former Professor To Host Sermon On Social Psychology Of Love

Jeffrey Victor will offer a sermon Sunday at the Unitarian-Universalist Congregation of Jamestown about the social psychology of love. The title of the sermon is “When you say love, what do you mean?”

Victor taught a course in the social psychology of intimate relationships at Jamestown Community College for many decades. Using social psychology research, he will challenge conventional talk about love, without suggesting any particular definition of “love.” He will address the question of why love means so many different things to different people? Why do people confuse love in marriage, love of their children, love of country, love of God and love of chocolate cake? Why is the word love used promiscuously, so that it may come to mean nothing in reality?

The sermon will be from 10:30-11:45 a.m. at the Unitarian-Universalist Congregation, 1255 Prendergast Ave., Jamestown. Victor taught courses in sociology and psychology at JCC for 52 years.

Victor has been a member since 1966, a past president of the Jamestown congregation and a frequent member of the church board.

He has been invited to give sermons in Unitarian churches as far away as St. Catherine, Canada, and Meadville, Pa.
