CASAC Educational Session: ‘More Power, More Control’

The Chautauqua Alcohol and Substance Abuse Council is offering an educational session for community members and professionals entitled “More Power, More Control: A Look at the Dynamics of Abuse in the Home” from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Jan. 31, at the Salvation Army, 83 S. Main St., Jamestown.

Natasha Juma, who has a bachelor’s degree in psychology/human development, is a prevention education coordinator for The Salvation Army Anew Center. Her days are spent developing and presenting sexual assault and domestic violence education, awareness, and prevention programs. Natasha also facilitates the sexual assault advocacy training for Anew Center employees to become certified as a sexual assault advocate through the Department of Health. In addition to developing and providing education and awareness, Juma also advocates for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault at the hospital, police station, and in court. The course will go over the basics of domestic violence, giving participants a clear understanding of how to define domestic violence and the impact it has on victims and society. Not only will participants walk away with a better understanding of what domestic violence is, but they will also gain insight into the factors that allow domestic violence to continue to be so prevalent. Finally, the course will conclude with suggestions on how to help victims and combat violence.

The course is also suitable for those seeking professional credentialing as a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC), Credentialed Prevention Professional (CPP) or Credentialed Prevention Specialist (CPS).The 3 CPP/CPS (Section 1) hours are approved for initial credit hours and for CPP/CPS/CASAC renewal by the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services. CASAC training offerings are suitable for community members that are aspiring to learn more about addictions and other related topics to improve their lives and the lives of others. This course work is also recognized and approved by the Pennsylvania Certification Board through reciprocity.
