Community Volunteers Bring Dance-Off To Prendergast Library

Thanks to two community members, kids and teens can now have fun learning dance moves and being active at the library. As part of the Summer Reading Challenge, the library will hold dance-offs on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:30, running now through Aug. 16.

Two volunteers will help run the event. Kayla Walker, a hip-hop instructor and dancer, will provide dance instruction. Walker says that she is “very excited to continue teaching dance throughout the community.”

Melanie Witkowski, executive director of CASAC, will be sharing “Healthy Living Tips,” to help kids understand the benefits of being active. She says that she is looking forward to “see(ing) the students work on different skills throughout the summer.”

For the first four weeks of summer, kids and teens can learn basic hip-hop moves, and progress to learning intermediate skills for the next four weeks. No sign-ups are required for this free program, and no dance experience is required.

Kids and teens who participate can work towards earning grand prize entries by completing a bingo board, where they earn stickers for participating in activities at the library, including the dance-offs, Makerspace challenges, and more.
