Castleman Quartet Program To Launch Its 13th Season At SUNY Fredonia
FREDONIA — The Castleman Quartet Program will launch its 13th season in residence at the State University at Fredonia.
The Quartet Program’s 2018 concert season will begin with recitals on June 9, June 18 and June 20 featuring guest artists Miclen LaiPang and Nicole Oswald, violin (also program alumni) and faculty member Csaba Erdelyi, viola. The opening events will be followed by a weekend of quartet and solo concerts June 21-23. All concerts take place at Mason Hall at the SUNY Fredonia School of Music.
The Castleman Quartet Program, now in its 49th season, is a seven-week workshop that brings together 36 gifted and accomplished string players, ages 14 to 28. In residence at Fredonia from June 3 to July 22, this summer’s participants come from across the United States, Canada, South America, China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan, including many who study at the world’s leading music schools and have significant competition and performance accolades to their credit. Each participant learns and performs one solo work and one or two string quartets while working under the conditions of a professional position, to further develop their solo and ensemble skills.
Distinguished faculty includes violinists Charles Castleman (also program director) and Laura Bossert; violists Allyson Dawkins, Csaba Erdelyi, John Kochanowski, George Taylor, and Basil Vendryes; cellists Terry King, Thomas Landschoot and Mark Rudoff; and Sonata coaches Kyoko Hashimoto and Claudia Hoca.
All concerts are presented in Juliet Rosch Recital Hall and in Diers Recital Hall in Mason Hall on the Fredonia campus. Concerts by the participants will be in three time periods: June 21-23, July 11-14 and July 18-21. Faculty and guest recitals will be June 9, June 18 and June 20 and July 3 and July 6. Admission is with a recommended contribution of $5 for participant concerts, and $10 to $15 for faculty/guest artist concerts. The Quartet Program is a registered non-profit organization; donations are welcome.
The participants will also perform free concerts in the community. Public venues will include Reed Library on the Fredonia campus; the Big Dipper Ice Cream Shop, 21 East Bookstore, and Key Bank (all in Dunkirk); and Ellicottville Brewing Co. (Fredonia).
