Rhythm And Light And Sound

I might as well be paying for room and board with all the time I’ve spent and will spend in our local arts district this week.

Today will begin a three-day stretch in which I can be found burning the midnight oil at Mojo’s Music Bar.

The fun kicks off tonight at 8, when Cold Lazarus hits the stage in an opening set for local favorites Smackdab, who’s frontman, Jon Marc Johnson, is celebrating a birthday. This is a big deal for me, as sharing a bill with Smackdab has been a longtime goal of mine. Smackdab brings the house and then brings it down anywhere they play, and so this highly anticipated concert is sure to be a party of previously unprecedented proportions by my standard.

Tomorrow, we’ll again be playing at Mojo’s in a later time slot, opening for our Erie friends Revelation, with whom I’ve shared many a bill as a member of The Elektra Kings. The weekend will be rounded out with Saturday’s show at Mojo’s featuring The Audience, Roger Bryan and the Orphans, and Big Lunch, which consists of two personal friends of mine.

This last show, in which I’ll be more than happy to assume the role of spectator rather than performer, is also highly anticipated by myself along with our local music supporters as The Audience will honor the 10th anniversary of its 2007 full-length debut “Below and Beyond” by performing the album in its entirety.

More about this particular show can be found in the corresponding article on this very page, but needless to say, I wouldn’t miss this show for the world. I’ve really come to love that album immensely since I first discovered it in a Frewsburg vintage and antiques store two years ago, and am eagerly anticipating hearing some of those tracks live for the first time.

I mentioned that I also spent some time downtown earlier in the week. On Monday, the Phoenix Rising Wellness Studio hosted its final Fire Nights poetry slam, courtesy of Pulse Poetry Slam. Regrettably, I had never previously attended a session of the Fire Nights slam, despite the fact that it has been hosted at the 212 Pine St. location since October 2015.

Also regrettably, my friend and fellow Cold Lazarus bandmate Marc Scapelitte will be closing the doors at Phoenix Rising this weekend due to circumstances beyond his control. It’s an extremely unfortunate blow to our community but, as Marc has publicly stated, now is a time for reflection on what the studio meant to all who benefited from its loving and compassionate energy while also looking ahead toward another chapter in life.

I’m glad for the opportunity to have witnessed the magic that occurs at these poetry slam events, and am thankful to have met a number of new individuals Monday night. Thankfully, Pulse Poetry Slam is still alive and well, and several future events are anticipated — the first of which will be held Monday at Mojo’s in what is being dubbed “PBR and Poetry Night.”

With the passage of time comes constant change, some for the better and some not so much. It’s up to us how we weather these changes, and to craft for ourselves a better tomorrow.

Thanks to our vibrant local arts community, it seems there’s always something to look forward to right down the line.

And now, here’s some of what you can expect to find in the area this week.
