Teachers Using Remind App To Stay Connected to Parents

“Making sure that we are engaging our parents in what is happening in the classroom led me to try the Remind app,” said Jefferson Middle School teacher, Tambra Hallett. “It has been so exciting to see how much parents are enjoying the app and I am thrilled that I have 100 percent participation with the app.”

Mrs. Hallett, is using the Remind app with parents in her classroom to let parents know about homework, sending extra credit opportunities, relaying a video showing how they to solve a math problem and then asking parents to have their children answer it describing the method used, letting parents know that an evacuation drill was successful, or reminding parents about the school fundraiser. If a student forgets to take an assignment home, Mrs. Hallett can attach it in the app or send a photo to the parent of their child working in class.

“I have even had parents send me a photo of their child doing their work at home,” said Mrs. Hallett. “The Remind app has really opened up communication for me with parents in an easy way. We can have conversations about their child or I can answer questions in a quick note.”

The Remind app is free; parents just have to sign up using a smart phone, regular cell phone or with an email. Many Jefferson teachers have been, or are using, the Remind app including Mindi Lydell.

“Currently, 95 percent of the families in my classroom have signed up for Remind messaging,” said Mrs. Lydell. “I use the Remind app daily to keep parents informed of any homework that was assigned. It is also used to share important announcements and an occasional photo of an activity happening in the classroom. Remind messaging is an easy and convenient way for teachers to stay in constant communication with parents. The two-way messaging allows parents and teachers to privately chat about minor issues that wouldn’t necessarily require a phone call. It also allows for parents to contact me with quick questions they may have about my classroom or the school. The Remind app keeps the parents involved in the learning taking place in the classroom.”
