Stocking The Fenton Shelves

A few years ago, this column featured one of the grocery stores in Jamestown. It was in business under the name of Treat and Ogilvie from 1909 until just after World War II. It was mostly a wholesale fruit and produce business, but the storefront served the public as a grocery store as well. Daniel Ogilvie and Charles Treat, with experience in the grocery and produce business, became partners and began business at 208 Pine St.A recent donation to the Fenton History Center adds one more tidbit of history to that store and to the history of Jamestown. Besides the fresh produce, they ...

The Endless Enigma (Part One)

Would I rather see it live, or listen to it in my car? This is often the dilemma I face when I must consider how best to consume my music. The introvert in me will always choose the latter. It's isolated, crystal clear and I can belt out my favorite songs while laying down my best beats upon my steering wheel in complete and utter privacy. Yes, jamming out in my car is one of my favorite past-times.But my personal experiences over the past few years have burst my bubble of self-isolation and exposed me to the sights and sounds of a live music event, whether they be pleasant or otherwise. ...

SALAMANCA - For the second time since 2013, Creedence Clearwater Revisited came to Salamanca's Seneca Allegany Resort and Casino. With a new singer they sound, and look, even closer to the classic line up so many fans would love to see.How can you say that a band whose founders, still on stage after five decades, does not have the chops to take the stage for a 90-minute show and bring it to the fans in front of them? The good thing is that Stu Cook and Doug 'Cosmo' Clifford do not disappoint, and neither do their bandmates. From the time they kicked off the Aug. 6 performance with "Born ...

The Granddog, The Cats, The Old Dogs

Marty came to visit. He is a granddog. We have two granddogs, plus an in-law dog. They coexist with our pair of Lab-sized mutts on occasion.Marty trundles between the house and the barn, trailing a woven 20-foot-long orange "lead," a leash without a loop that gun dog trainers use to limit their pups' range.Marty is near to the ground, just a smidgen higher than those pot-bellied pigs whose races delighted us at last month's Jefferson County Fair. His pedigree crosses Jack Russell terrier with dachshund, yielding a light brown "wiener dog" on steroids.Marty has two trundle speeds. One is ...
