WRFA, Southern Tier Brewery To Host Third Annual Fundraiser With British Invasion Theme
Listeners of Chautauqua County’s only locally owned, non-religious radio station can do their part this weekend to ensure its continued operation.
On Sunday, WRFA-LP’s third annual “Great American Picnic” fundraiser will be held, featuring food and live music from several regional bands which will perform music from the 1960s.
The fundraiser will be held from noon-4 p.m. at the Southern Tier Brewing Company, and is open to the public free of charge. According to Dennis Drew, general manager of WRFA, the “Great American Picnic” serves as the station’s primary annual fundraising event, and has been met with success in each of its first two manifestations.
“We are a listener supported, non-commercial station, so we really depend on fundraisers like this to keep us going,” Drew said. “It’s free, and we raise money through hot dog and beer sales. So it’s up to people to decide how much they want to come out and participate in those things.”
Though last year’s theme was Woodstock, this year’s theme is focusing on music from the British Invasion era, which directly preceded the psychedelic-infused genres that pervaded the Woodstock festival.
Cover versions of songs by bands such as The Beatles, Dave Clark Five, Dusty Springfield and The Zombies will be performed by eight bands originating from the surrounding area. The bands include: Smackdab; Erickson, Peterson and Peters; The Henways; The Alex Kates Band; Cindy Love and her Funk Family; Will and Sarah; Gina Vecchio; and SYMBA.
“It’s really just a fun afternoon,” Drew said. “Those who attended last year for the Woodstock tribute will attest to the kind of show we’re expecting.”
A portion of the proceeds collected by Southern Tier between 1 and 4 p.m. will go directly toward WRFA. Donations will also be accepted.
