You Get What You Pay For

To The Reader’s Forum: It’s been so long since I’ve seen a well-designed website, I don’t even remember that day. Most are cluttered and complex and show little sensitivity to the user interface or user experience. I often have to hunt for buttons or links that allow me to do the simplest things, but if the sites were designed properly, those tasks would be intuitive and seamless. In the designed world, there are two essential principles that are universal: “Less is more”, and “form follows function”. But I see little evidence of those in the design of ...

Still Up In The Air

To The Reader’s Forum: I have read all of Dr Randy Elf’s letters and comments on commercial air service to and from Jamestown. While I have many thoughts on this subject based on as much personal experience as a passenger to and from the Jamestown airport as anyone in Chautauqua county over many years, and even taking flying lessons at the Jamestown airport with instructor Andy Nord, Dr. Elf needs to tell us what is (or is not) a “good airplane”. If he doesn’t know, perhaps we should ask an airplane manufacturer - maybe Boeing ? Mr. Fred Larson spoke in support of ...

The Campaign Is Over

To The Reader’s Forum: In November the country elected Donald Trump as the next president of the United States. While some may disagree with the results even those who didn’t vote for Trump agree that he won. On January 20, 2025 Donald Trump will take the oath of office as president, not monarch god. The campaign is over. It’’s time to take down the Trump flags. Annette Goodman Ashville

Government Priorities Need To Focus On People’s Wants, Not Trump’s Wants

To The Reader’s Forum: We hear often that Trump nominates this person, Trump wants to do tariffs, Trump wants to cut regulations, Trump wants to deport our neighbors It’s always “Trump wants.” But that is not what presidents are for. We, the people, tell our elected representatives what we want. We want clean air. We want to be protected from those who pollute the air (regulations do that). We want Social Security. We want Medicare. We want Medicaid. We want to be protected from fraud and corporate abuse (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau). Congress passed those ...

A Climate That Resembles Hell

To The Reader’s Forum: I grew up on a small, desolate iceberg in Chautauqua County. As we used to say, “Seven months of winter and five months of bad sledding”. But at the age of twenty-five, I threw away my snow shovels and moved to a southern state. Besides my education, that was one of the most important things I’ve ever done. Southern climes are conducive to good mental health. I no longer have to worry about snow tires and treacherous driving, or whether I’ll reach my destinations in one piece. When I moved here in 1985, I stood on my front lawn on Christmas Eve ...

Thinking About Our Country’s Future

To The Reader’s Forum: Our political environment is as much on my mind as everyones. It seems like this particular election more than any other. On my mind is the future of our country, but also the future of our society. My reading this morning struck a cord and I was moved to share, rather than share my political beliefs. It referenced Matthew 7:1-2. “ Do not judge,or you too will be judged. For the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” I often quote this truth, but am I living it ? The reading went on ...
