Taxing the Rich is Wise Capitalism To the Reader’s Forum: I was driving the other day and saw an orange yard sign with a simple handwritten message; Tax the Rich. When I got home, I read an article on how 100 billionaire families had contributed $2.6 billion to politicians in 2024, 70% going to Republican candidates. Since the 2010 Citizens United decision, there has been a 160-fold increase in billionaire political contributions. Restore Protected Status To Afghan Refugees To The Reader’s Forum: The Trump Administration just revoked temporary protected status for more than 9,000 Afghan refugees living in the United States. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced May 12th that conditions in Afghanistan no longer constitute a significant threat. This is despite a brutal Taliban regime that continues to exact revenge and punish those who don’t conform to rigid rules of conduct. To The Reader’s Forum: My heart leapt as I read these words from Twan Leenders in the last Sunday edition of The Post-Journal (April 19-20): “More boat inspections, wash stations, and better signage at launches could significantly reduce the risk of new invasives.” Finally, a well-known and respected local scientist is putting out the call and I thank him.
