Let Your Voice Be Heard On Herbicides In Chautauqua Lake

Everyone who cares about Chautauqua Lake should take time in the next week to familiarize themselves with the draft of the Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement to use herbicides in targeted areas of Chautauqua Lake.

Copies of the plan are available online at www.elleryny.org/html/legals.html or at the Ellery Town Hall, 25 Sunnyside Ave., Bemus Point. A public hearing will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 1, in the Fluvanna Fire Hall for those who want to make comments on the plan. The Ellery Town Board will accept written comments on the submission. Written comments should be sent to Ms. Rebecca Haines at PO Box 429 Bemus Point, NY 14217 or emailed ellerytc@windstream.net. Comments must be received before 4 p.m. Monday, March 12.

The hearing is important for several reasons. It would set predictable guidelines about where herbicides could be used in Chautauqua Lake and make the use of herbicides easier for organizations that want to do so. Now is the time for those with concerns about the use of herbicides and for those in favor of using herbicides as part of the treatment plan for Chautauqua to speak up and make their feelings known.

Chautauqua Lake is important to everyone in Chautauqua County, even those who will never dip their toe into the water. We hope all those with an interest take the time to make their feelings a part of the public record.
