Wanted Man Jailed After Setting Woman On Fire

Luis M. Castro-Mojica

A city man who had been on the Jamestown Police Department’s Top 10 Most Wanted list for a previous domestic incident was jailed after allegedly dousing a woman with a flammable substance and setting her on fire.

Luis M. Castro-Mojica, 37, is scheduled to be arraigned on a charge of first-degree assault when he appears today in Jamestown City Court.

Jamestown police responded Tuesday around 11:35 p.m. to 210 Thayer St. where they found a 27-year-old woman with burns to her face, head and torso.

The woman, who was not identified Wednesday, was taken to UPMC Chautauqua WCA hospital and immediately airlifted to the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo. She was listed as being in critical condition, Jamestown police said in a press release.

Police did not say what was doused on the woman prior to being burned.

Castro-Mojica, who was taken into custody Tuesday night, had been wanted by Jamestown police on three warrants stemming from a domestic incident in September. According to court records, he was wanted on charges of unlawful imprisonment, criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation and criminal contempt.

No information regarding the prior incident has been released. Castro-Mojica had been listed on the department’s Top 10 Most Wanted list since September prior to his arrest.

“The quick action of the officers who arrived at the scene allowed for a safe apprehension of the suspect,” Capt. Robert Samuelson of the Jamestown Police Department told The Post-Journal.

Samuelson said the Chautauqua County District Attorney’s Office was notified and is currently working with JPD. Additional charges are expected, and the investigation remains ongoing.
