National Titles In Reach For JCC Men, Women’s Swimming & Diving

FORT PIERCE, FL — The records were falling for Jamestown Community College (JCC) swimming on day three of the national championships hosted by Indian River State College. Thanks to four prime record-setting performances, JCC enters the fourth and final day of the event with a 117.5-point lead on the women’s side and an eight-point edge for the men.

“Today was our most successful day yet,” said head coach Todd Conklin. “With four new program records and one regional record broken. The kids really brought their ‘A’ game, and it’s exciting to see fast swims and new records being set.”

The night started with a pair of All-American swims as Derisree Putt finished seventh in the 100 individual medley and Addison Lawson just snuck into that top 12 All-American status by finishing 12th.

Then came the men, where Zach Johnson broke his own Jamestown record with a time of 53:39; that tenth-place swim is also a new Region 3 best mark.

In the 500 free, the Jayhawks had another pair in the pool, with Emily Swan breaking the 14-year-old program record in a time of 5:40:20. Teammate Cassie Lyon was right behind her to secure 11th overall.

Next up for JCC was the women’s 100 back. Desiree Putt shot off the block to capture the sixth-best time, with Sophia Gervasio snatching eighth.

Roxanne Lothian once again found her name on the JCC record boards with her 1:10:64 in the 100 breast, good enough for fifth in the nation. Fellow Jayhawk, Katrina DeGroff, also claimed All-American by timing in 11th.

Not to be outdone, Zach Johnson broke yet another top time in his 100 breast, touching at 57:82 to break the record he had set earlier in the day in prelims.

Day three finished up with the 200 medley relay, where both teams added to their championship lead. The women’s team of Desiree Putt, Roxanne Lothian, Willow Chase, and Emily Swan was flawless in their fourth-place time of 1:58:97. The men also looked great, clocking a 1:42:38 from Christian Merrill, Zach Johnson, Cameron Milewski, and Daniel Peterson.

“With tomorrow being the longest day of the week, we’re focused on getting as many people into the finals as possible. We’re riding a wave of momentum, and we’re looking to carry it through to the finish. The goal remains the same, and the fight is not over yet,” finished Conklin.

Jamestown eyes a double national championship on Saturday, with prelims beginning at 9:30 a.m. and championship swims at 5:30 p.m. from the Sunshine State.

Starting at $3.50/week.
