New Video From Doorbell Camera Believed To Show Burham

This screen grab from a video released Friday by the Pennsylvania State Police is to be an image of Michael Burham. The video was taken in the last couple days at a location identified as “south of Warren.” Photo from the Pennsylvania State Police

YOUNGSVILLE, Pa. — Pennsylvania State Police have released doorbell footage from the “last couple of days” that they believe is a confirmed sighting of jail escapee Michael Burham.

Lt. Col. George Bivens said during a media briefing Friday that the footage came from a residence “south of Warren” shortly after 5 a.m. “(We) consider this to be a confirmed sighting.”

Bivens said the video, turned into authorities hours after it was taken, shows that Burham is traveling at night and may have an injured ankle. “(There) may be a bit of a limp there as well,” he said. “We believe he did potentially have an injury during the escape.”

Bivens explained that there are a “variety of things that we looked at” including a “detailed analysis of the video (and) other things at the scene that they look for” in evaluating the video.

“All of those factors together,” he said, “we believe that this is likely Burham.”

Bivens said investigators have an idea of the area he is in and “within that area is a significant amount of National Forest but also residences. I don’t believe he’s sitting in one area. … As he moves around, he encounters residences, businesses.”

He asked those with doorbell and surveillance cameras to “regularly review” footage for “anything they think may be helpful to the search.”

The support of the community was also evidenced in another way during the briefing. “We and I appreciate the unwavering support we have received,” Bivens said, from the communities directly impacted by the search.

That took the form of a “bag of handmade thank you cards” from children at a local daycare.

Bivens said the cards have been placed on a table at the command post. “I don’t think one person has passed by that table without reading a few,” he said, noting that he wants the kids and parents to know that they will do their best to keep them safe.

Given the camera footage, investigators continue to believe that Burham is in the general area.

Burham is the prime suspect in the May 11 shooting death of 34-year-old Kala Hodgkin inside her William Street home in Jamestown. Afterward, the former Chautauqua County resident is accused of setting fire to another woman’s car in Jamestown.

More than a week after Hodgkin’s death, Burham allegedly kidnapped a Warren County couple from their Sheffield home at gunpoint. Using their vehicle, he drove the pair to South Carolina.

The couple was found safe, and Burham was eventually taken into custody after eluding police for days by running through the woods. In June, he was extradited back to New York state where he went before a federal judge in Buffalo.

Burham had been moved to Warren County on June 19. He escaped Warren County Jail late July 6.

Bivens reiterated a point from yesterday that he is “not recommending the cancellation of outdoor activities.”

He asked that people should keep a distance and “allow law enforcement teams to do their jobs” if they counter police activity.

“(There is) no other reason to believe he poses more of a threat to the public than he did yesterday as an example,” he said. “(We) have no reason to start advising people that we want to lock down certain areas or that they need to be anything more than vigilant.”

In an update to an item from Thursday, Bivens said that the stockpile in the photo released by police probably dates to when Burham was on the run the first time. However, he did say that investigators believe Burham was able to access it during this manhunt.

“I think he gets a disadvantage the longer this goes on,” Bivens said. Living in the woods or a shelter with “very little or no support, that’s not easy to do. The longer time goes the more difficult it is for him.

“We’re here for the long haul,” he said, and remain “confident we will apprehend him.

“The search isn’t stopping for the weekend.”

The collective reward for information leading to an arrest has increased to $22,000 and the tip line to the command center in Youngsville is (717) 265-9650..
