County Reports 1 New Case, 23rd Recovery

The number of active cases of the coronavirus in Chautauqua County as of Wednesday compared to the number of those who have recovered.

There has been a “dramatic drop” in the number of Chautauqua County resident under quarantine or in isolation during the coronavirus pandemic.

County Executive PJ Wendel said the decrease can be attributed to social distancing — a practice preached by local, state and federal officials for more than a month.

“I think if you look at the numbers, we had five days of no reports of new cases,” Wendel told The Post-Journal. “I firmly believe social distancing has worked, is working and will continue to work.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, the county had 28 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with the latest a woman in her 20s. To date there are two active cases, with 23 county residents now considered fully recovered.

The Chautauqua County Department of Health and Human Services said 43 people remain either in quarantine or isolation. And of the tests administered locally, 620 have come back negative.

The county, in its daily virus update, highlighted recent trends including the fact there are no COVID-19-related hospitalizations; only one new confirmed case in the last six days; and that the county has “one of the lowest positive test percentages (4%) in the entire state.
