Betty Jane (Davis) Martin

Betty Jane (Davis) Martin, 98, formerly of the North Haven Apartments, Sherman, N.Y., died Saturday, June 22, 2019, at Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility in Greenhurst, N.Y.

She was born Dec. 29, 1920 at Brady’s Bend, Pa., the daughter of the late Adam C. Davis and the late Myrtle E. Stanley. Betty attended East Brady Public Schools, graduating from East Brady High School in 1938 and the Kittanning Business College in 1940.

She moved to Sherman, N.Y., when her parents bought the Ritz Theater. Betty booked the movies and did the bookkeeping for the theater. She then worked 15 years at Duplex Manufacturing before moving on to H.K. Nuttal Equipment, where she worked in the office for 15 years. From there, Betty then went to work as a clerk at the Sherman Post Office for 17 years. She joined the Sherman Community Church in 1941, where she taught Sunday school and religious education and served on several church boards. Betty was a member of the Norton Raspas Auxiliary and a past president and treasurer of the Y.W. Circle at the Community Church. She was past matron of the Acacia Chapter O.E.S, treasurer of XYZ of Sherman, life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Mayville and a member of the Mayville Senior Citizens and Goodwill Club.

Betty is survived by her son, Stanley Martin of Mayville; two grandson: Craig and Todd Martin of Mayville; several greatgrandchildren; and a nephew, Fred Fortune of Sherman.

She is predeceased by her husband, G. Arthur Martin, who died Dec. 20, 1992; two sons: George A. Martin Jr., who died Aug. 2, 2017 and Gary Martin, who died Dec. 29, 2010; her grandson, Donnie Martin, who died Dec. 22, 1996; her mother, Myrtle Stanley, who died Oct. 24, 1998; her father, who died July of 1921; her stepfather, Frank M. Stanley Sr., who died November of 1948; her sister, Dorothy Fortune, who died March 15, 1998; and her brother, Frank M. Stanley Jr., who died in January of 1948.

No prior visitation or funeral service scheduled. Burial will be in the Sherman Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Mrs. Martin’s memory may be made to the Stanley Hose Co., or the Sherman Community Church.
