Akron Spoils Maycock’s Bona Return

AKRON, Ohio — The return of senior Mckenna Maycock gave the St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team a spark, but it would be a 16-2 run from host Akron in the final four minutes that would be the deciding factor in a 67-58 Zips victory Wednesday morning at James A. Rhodes Arena.

Maycock paced the Bonnies with 14 points, adding five assists and four rebounds in 37 minutes of game action. Freshman Asianae Johnson posted 11 points while fellow first-year guard Deja Francis chipped in with 9 points and four boards.

Both sides started strong offensively with the Bonnies shooting 50 percent during the first quarter, but still trailing the Zips by a point, 15-14, after 10 minutes.

Akron grabbed a 21-16 advantage with a 6-0 break to begin the second quarter, but the Bonnies defense would hold the Zips off the board for nearly five minutes to get back within 21-20. The Zips eventually headed to the locker room still ahead by just one possession, 28-25.

During the third quarter, the Bonnies would again force Akron to go cold from the floor. The Zips endured a span of missing eight straight field goal attempts to allow the visitors to pull ahead, 41-40, after three quarters.

St. Bonaventure (2-6) maintained the momentum heading for the final quarter as Danielle Migliore drained back-to-back 3-pointers for a 47-42 Bona lead.

Following a Deja Francis traditional three-point play, the Zips would close within 50-46 before Maycock again found Migliore on the wing for her third trey of the quarter and a 53-46 advantage with 6:35 to play. A layup from Francis a minute later gave the visitors a 55-49 edge.

From there, though, the Zips would start to take over.

The Bonnies would remain ahead by six until the 4:43 mark, but Shayna Harmon started the Zips rally with a layup for a 55-51 score. That tally held until 3:20 was left on the clock when Megan Sefcik drilled a 3-pointer to pull the hosts within a point. On the Zips’ next trip down the floor, Harmon worked to the line for two free throws, giving Akron the lead.

St. Bonaventure momentarily regained the advantage on a nice up-and-under bucket by Johnson for a 57-56 score with 2:35 remaining. Another trey from Sefcik on the next Zips possession, though, gave Akron a lead it never relinquished.

Akron moved to 5-1 on the season behind 41 combined points by Harmon, who finished with a game-high 21 points, and Sefcik. In the second half, Akron shot at a 44 percent clip (12 for 27) including a 9-for-14 success rate in the fourth.

The Bonnies quickly turnaround for a home battle with Franciscan sister school Siena. That game is slated for a 7 p.m. start Friday night at the Reilly Center.
