Cassadaga Valley volleyball match postponed until Tuesday

By The Post-Journal 2 min read

Monday's Section VI Class D volleyball semifinal between No. 4 Maple Grove and No. 1 Cassadaga Valley has been postponed to Tuesday.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office reported Saturday that two Cassadaga Valley male juveniles were involved in a one-car accident on Maple Avenue in Cassadaga. One of the teenagers was flown to an area hospital for treatment while the other sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.

In a Facebook post Saturday, the district called the news "heartbreaking" and said it would have counseling available over the weekend.

"Our hearts are with both families as they navigate this unimaginable tragedy," the post said. "We ask that our community respect the privacy of both families during this incredibly difficult time."

On Sunday evening, Maple Grove's volleyball program also made a post on Facebook.

"Some things are much bigger than volleyball.

Our hearts are heavy for the Cassadaga Valley community as they mourn the loss of one of their own.

Just a few weeks ago, our teams stood together on the court for Pink Night -- a reminder that while we may compete across the net, we are part of something much bigger than the game.

To the Cassadaga Valley players, coaches, students, families and entire community: please know that your Maple Grove volleyball family is holding you close in our hearts and prayers. We stand with you during this incredibly difficult time.

Out of respect for the Cassadaga Valley community, our semifinal match has been postponed from Monday to Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Tonight, and in the days ahead, our thoughts are with you, Cougars."

As of Sunday evening, the other Class D semifinal between No. 7 Ellicottville and No. 3 Clymer was still scheduled to be played Monday in Clymer. The final is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Jamestown High School.
