Randolph football ranked No. 6 in Class D

Photo by Mike Frame Alex Garland and the Randolph Cardinals are the highest-ranked local football team announced by the New York State Sportswriters on Wednesday, naming the team No. 6 in Class D.

Randolph remained the highest-ranked local team as the New York State Sportswriters Association released its weekly football rankings Wednesday.

The No. 6 Cardinals (4-1, 2-0 Section VI Class D) beat Silver Creek/Forestville 42-0 last Friday and will take on Franklinville/Ellicottville this Friday in Franklinville.

In Class C, Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove is No. 20, up from being an honorable-mention selection a week ago, while Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton and Clymer/Sherman/Panama remained honorable mentions. The Herd (4-1, 3-0 Section VI Class C South) and Eagles (3-2, 2-1 Section VI Class C South) will face off Friday night in Mayville while the Wolfpack (4-1, 3-1 Section VI Class C South) will host Cattaraugus-Little Valley on Saturday in Clymer.

Wilson is No. 2 in Class D and Newfane is No. 10 while the top-ranked team in the state is Section III's Dolgeville. In Class C, Barker/Royalton-Hartland is No. 16 and Springville is No. 17 while the top-ranked team in the state is Section IV's Chenango Forks.

In Class AA, Iona Prep of the Catholic High Schools. Locally, St. Francis is No. 5, Canisius is No. 10, Bennett is No. 20, Health Sciences is No. 26 and Lancaster is No. 27 while St. Joe's is an honorable mention.

In Class A, Section I Somers/North Salem and Section VIII Garden City are co-No. 1s. In Western New York, Orchard Park is No. 9, Grand Island is No. 18, West Seneca West is No. 21 and Starpoint is No. 25 while Clarence, Williamsville East and Williamsville North are honorable mentions.

Section V Monroe and Section XI Sayville are co-No. 1s in Class B. Locally, OC Rivals is No. 13, West Seneca East is No. 14, Williamsville South is No. 24 and McKinley is No. 25 while Depew, Iroquois, Maryvale, Pioneer and St. Mary's are honorable mentions.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Portville remained No. 1, Chautauqua Lake stayed at No. 3 and Gowanda remained No. 12 in the girls volleyball rankings, which are released every two weeks by the New York Volleyball Coaches Association.

The Panthers (9-2, 8-0 CCAA Division 1) beat Williamsville South in nonleague action Monday and will travel to Southwestern for Division 1 play tonight. The Eagles (9-0, 8-0 CCAA Division 3) swept Maple Grove on Monday and Brocton on Wednesday. Gowanda (11-1, 8-0 CCAA Division 2) swept Salamanca on Tuesday. Also in Class C, Newfane is No. 10.

In Class D, Clymer moved up to No. 4 from No. 7. The Pirates (8-3, 5-1 CCAA Division 4) lost to Forestville on Monday. They will visit Westfield tonight. Westfield, which was No. 1 in Class D two weeks ago, dropped to No. 9. The Wolverines (9-2, 6-1 CCAA Division 3) beat Panama on Monday and Maple Grove on Wednesday. Cassadaga Valley, which was No. 6 two weeks ago, dropped to No. 10. The Cougars (10-3, 6-1 CCAA Division 4) beat Pine Valley on Monday and travel to Forestville tonight. Maple Grove, which was unranked two weeks ago, is No. 15. The Red Dragons (4-6, 3-4 CCAA Division 3) lost to Chautauqua Lake on Monday and Westfield on Wednesday. Section V Avoca/Prattsburgh is the No. 1 team in Class D.

In Class AAA, Lancaster is No. 1 and Niagara Falls is No. 14. In Class AA, Orchard Park is No. 1, West Seneca West is No. 8 and Clarence is No. 13 while Niagara Wheatfield is an honorable mention. In Class A, Section VIII's Mineola is No. 1 while Grand Island is No. 3 and Williamsville South is No. 5. In Class B, where Section III's Westhill is No. 1, Eden is No. 4, Depew is No. 8 and Lafayette is No. 17.

BOYS SOCCER

Westfield/Brocton is still the only local team ranked in boys soccer. The Wolverines (12-1-0, 9-0-0 CCAA Division III), who were No. 16 a week ago, checked in at No. 11. Westfield/Brocton beat Frewsburg on Monday and Chautauqua Lake on Wednesday. The Wolverines will visit Maple Grove on Friday. Also in Class C, Wilson is No. 9 and Section V East Rochester is the state's top-ranked team.

In Class AAA, Lancaster is No. 12 while Section III's Baldwinsville's is No. 1. In Class AA, Clarence is No. 6 and Williamsville North is No. 12 while Section II's Bethlehem is the state's top-ranked team. In Class A, Section I's Rye is No. 1 and Lewiston-Porter is No. 7. Section VIII's Carle Place is No. 1 while Lafayette is No. 4 and Alden is No. 8 in Class B. Section V's Fillmore is No. 1 in Class D.

GIRLS SOCCER

Frewsburg and Ellicottville are the only local teams ranked in girls soccer.

In Class C, Frewsburg remained No. 16. The Bears (10-3-0, 8-0-0 CCAA Division 3) beat Westfield/Brocton on Tuesday. They will host Chautauqua Lake today and travel to Southwestern on Saturday. Wilson is No. 2 in Class C while Section V's Kendall is the state's top-ranked team.

In Class D, Ellicottville moved up seven spots to No. 10. The Eagles (6-5-1, 4-3-0) lost to Randolph on Tuesday and will travel to Franklinville today. Section III's Cincinnatus is the state's top-ranked team in Class D.

In Class AAA, Section XI's Connetquot is No. 1. In Class AA, Clarence is No. 5 and Orchard Park is No. 9 while Section VIII's South Side is the state's top-ranked team. Starpoint is No. 11 and Lewiston-Porter is No. 15 while Section III's New Hartford is No. 1 in Class A. In Class B, St. Mary's is No. 4 and Allegany-Limestone/Hinsdale is No. 11 while Section I's Pleasantville is No. 1.
