PANAMA -- When asked to describe his quarterback, Gavin Burchanowski, Dave Bodamer immediately responded with three words: "Oh. My. God."
Then the Clymer/Sherman/Panama head football coach rattled off a series of adjectives.
"Explosive."
"Reliable."
"Great."
All applied on Saturday afternoon at Jack Keeney Field.
Needing a win to advance to the Section VI Class C playoffs later this week, the Burchanowski-led Wolfpack knocked off Allegany-Limestone/Hinsdale 47-24 in their Class C South regular-season finale. The win advances Clymer/Sherman/Panama (6-2, 4-2) into a home quarterfinal game Saturday against Cleveland Hill.
"My biggest takeaway from this year," Bodamer said, "is how this group has bought into everything."
It's clear Burchanowski has.
Against the Gators (4-4, 2-4), he rushed for 177 yards -- 141 in the first half when he scored touchdowns on runs of 4, 31, 9 and 12 yards to help stake the Wolfpack to a 28-8 lead at the break. After intermission, he tossed touchdown passes to seniors Bryan Gomez and Hayden Sexton from 25 and 17 yards, respectively. In between those scores, senior Blake Beckerink accounted for a TD on a 14-yard scamper with just over four minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Armed with a 41-8 lead, the outcome was no longer in doubt. There's also little doubt about who is spearheading the Wolfpack's drive to the playoffs either.
"(Burchanowski) leads, on and off the field," Bodamer said. "You look forward to those kinds of kids."
Bodamer's defense was up to the task as well, yielding just 149 total yards, including only 23 on the ground. Max White led the way with eight tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery; Trevor White was credited with nine tackles; and Burchanowski added a pair of tackles and an interception.
NOTES: Beckerink had a fine game carrying the ball, finishing with 119 yards on 18 carries. ... Allegany-Limestone/Hinsdale's first-half touchdown was courtesy of a 90-yard kickoff return by junior Greg Peck. ... In the second half, sophomore quarterback Tayden Margeson tossed TD passes of 60 and 14 yards to senior Nolan O'Brien and Peck, respectively. ... Credited with PATs for Clymer/Sherman/Panama were Beckerink and Max White with runs and Ronald Johnson with a kick.
