The Jamestown Community College women’s soccer team is rewriting the program’s record books, but don’t ask the ladies about their excellent exploits, as the team remains focused on the results that continue to include impressive wins. The latest came Wednesday, as the Jayhawks knocked off conference foe Erie CC 7-0.
Jamestown CC was powered in its latest win by Kaylyn Carnes, who opened the scoring at the 14:50 mark off a pass from Avery Johnson to give the green and gold a 1-0 lead.
Carnes was back at it in the 37th minute, as her second goal of the game made it 2-0 for the home squad. The Jayhawks took that 2-0 advantage into halftime before the Jayhawks broke the game open in the second half.
Coming out of the break, Mary Lundmark set up Johnson at 55:36 for her first goal of the day, her 19th as a Jayhawk, tying the single-season program record and making it a 3-0 game.
Carnes was back on the scoresheet just 90 seconds later, as she tallied her third goal of the day to make it 4-0.
In the 75th minute, Carnes wasn’t done. This time, she set up teammate Mary Lundmark for her lone tally of the game and a 5-0 Jamestown CC advantage.
Carnes continued to stuff the stat sheet as she netted her fourth goal, her 11th of the season, to give the Jayhawks a six-goal lead.
At the 83:24 mark, the Jayhawks witnessed history, as Johnson scored her second goal of the game and 20th of the season to set the program record for most goals in a season. The achievement brought a subtle smile to her face and cheers from her teammates.
On the other side of the field, Angel Busch secured her fifth clean sheet on the season, advancing her program record for most shutouts in a season and for a career, completing a near perfect day for the hosts.
The victory moves the Jayhawks to 8-1 on the year and 7-1 in Region 3 play.
Jamestown CC is back on the pitch at 2 p.m. Saturday when it visits Herkimer College.
MEN
JAYHAWKS END SLIDE
It had been a tough stretch for the Jayhawks, having dropped three straight games, but they bounced back in a big way against conference rival Erie CC with an 8-0 home victory.
The game didn’t start out looking like a dominant win was going to unfold, with a scoreless affair lasting through the first 26 minutes before the Jayhawks broke things open with six goals in a 15-minute span.
Samuel Hynes kicked off the scoring on a pass from William Mills at the 26:42 mark, giving Jamestown CC a 1-0 lead.
The advantage doubled in the 29th minute as Hynes dished out an assist to Liam Doyle for a 2-0 advantage. That lead became three just over 30 seconds later as Doyle found a streaking Hynes for his second goal of the game and a 3-0 advantage.
Not to be outdone, Doyle was back in the scoring column in the 32nd minute off a pass from Harry Hughes to make it 4-0.
The scoring onslaught continued with reserve Alfie Moynihan getting in on the action with goals in the 37th and 41st minutes. The first was assisted by Mfundo Mthethwa, while the second was unassisted.
The Jayhawks took that 6-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Hughes found himself on the end of a header pass from Jack Morris for his second goal as a Jayhawk and a 7-0 score.
Morris wasn’t done, as the sophomore took a pass from Doyle and found the back of the net for the final goal of the game.
In net, Jack Lewis stopped both shots he faced to preserve the shutout.
The latest triumph sets Jamestown CC's record at 6-4 overall and 5-4 in regional action.
The Jayhawks return to the pitch at 6 p.m. Monday when they travel to Fredonia State.
