Tom Langworthy's ear-to-ear smile told the story Friday night.
"Everything took care of itself," the Jamestown head football coach said following the Red & Green's 49-8 victory over Hutch Tech in a Class AA game at Strider Field. "I was just really proud of the guys and the way that we handled things. Everybody flourished tonight."
Kam Monroe was at the top of the list.
The senior running back rushed for 78 yards and scored four of Jamestown's seven first-half touchdowns, and Langworthy's defense took care of the rest as the hosts concluded their regular season 5-3 overall and 3-3 in the division. They will meet Lockport in the Section VI quarterfinals next Friday, back at Strider Field.
"I know they're going to be fired up, and so are we," said Langworthy, who saw his team beat the Lions 35-28 two weeks ago. "It's going to be a great ballgame, but I'm going to enjoy this one for 24 hours."
There was plenty to be happy about if you were a member of the Red & Green, starting with Monroe, who found the end zone from 5 and 2 yards in the first quarter and from 6 and 7 yards in the second period.
"I'm so proud of him," Langworthy said. "He's so selfless. He's taken on that blocking-back role as things have evolved throughout the season, and he's really good at that."
Tack on a 70-yard interception return to the house by sophomore Navon Goodridge and Jamestown led 21-0 after 12 minutes. In addition to Monroe's two second-quarter TDs, sophomore Alaric Richards found paydirt on a 3-yard run, and senior Karson Milne made a spectacular catch in the end zone to complete a 20-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Drew Bloomquist as the lead ballooned to 49-0 at the break.
The entire second half was played with a running clock.
"To watch guys just be there for their teammates is really special," Langworthy said. "I'm just really proud of those guys not worrying about stats, just helping each other out. Our words of the week this week are 'real love.' Real love is sacrificing for other people, and that's really what it is, and that's a great life lesson as well."
The Engineers (0-8, 0-6) scored their lone touchdown on a 30-yard pass from Yerniel Colon to Quinones inside the final minute.
"Our kids are confident, they're hungry, they're getting better and this is where I feel you see the fruits of your labor; you're playing your best ball at the end of the season," Langworthy said. " ... I like where we're at right now."
NOTES: Richards finished with 44 yards on the ground on eight carries. ... Besides Goodridge, the other Jamestown defenders with interceptions were juniors Bretten Kozaczki and Izayiah Holland. ... Sophomore Mason Crawford was credited with a fumble recovery. ... Robbie Williams converted all seven point-after kicks.
