CCAAs are underway

Higher seeds shine on first day of tennis championships

LAKEWOOD -- The Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Tennis Championships got underway Wednesday at the Lakewood YMCA with singles action taking to the courts.

All 12 matches played Wednesday ended in straight sets with the higher seeds winning all but one.

Falconer's Myla Brainard, the defending CCAA singles champion, advanced with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Cassadaga Valley's Cathryn Russell, followed by a 6-2, 6-0 win over Salamanca's Kurryn Glowacki.

Brainard's Golden Falcons teammate, Rachael Swanson, also advanced with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Cassadaga Valley's Addisyn Grissom and a 6-1, 6-1 win over Chautauqua Lake/Maple Grove's Cameron Mackey. Swanson finished third a year ago.

Olean's Rachael Dulmus beat Frewsburg/Southwestern's Kelsey Fischer 6-1, 7-5 in the prequarterfinals and Chautauqua Lake/Maple Grove's Vivian Watson 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals to make Friday's semifinals. Dulmus was primarily a doubles player this fall for the Huskies.

Finally, Frewsburg/Southwestern's Claire Spielman beat Jamestown's Kenzie Potter 6-3, 6-3 in the prequarterfinals before a 6-3, 6-0 win over Salamanca's Betsy Leyva in the quarterfinals. Leyva swept Spielman in both of their regular-season meetings.

Doubles action will take to the courts today at 10 a.m. with 26 pairs vying for four spots in Friday's semifinals.

Singles semifinals, beginning at 10 a.m. Friday will feature Brainard vs. Spielman and Swanson vs. Dulmus.

The top three singles players and top three doubles pairs will advance to the Section VI Championships, which will be held Friday, Oct. 16 and Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Miller Tennis Center in Williamsville.

Prior to Wednesday's action, the league's Sportsmanship Award winners were honored. Dunkirk was the Division 1 team recipient and Cassadaga Valley was the Division 2 team recipient. Swanson, Frewsburg/Southwestern's Natalie David, Dunkirk's Andrea Nye, Chautauqua Lake/Maple Grove's Josie Dawson and Cassadaga Valley's Gemma Andersen.
