Hillbillies sweep at first Brocton XC meet

BROCTON -- A little over a year ago, Luke Vosz and Rose Carr began the first varsity cross country program at Brocton Central School and on Tuesday evening the team held its first-ever Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association meet at Lake Erie State Park.
"This is Brocton's first time having a cross country team," Vosz said. "It's been wonderful to be a part of this and to have Coach Carr alongside, to be doing this together. It's been a great opportunity."
Athletes from Fredonia/Westfield, Silver Creek/Dunkirk/Forestville and West Valley joined the Bulldogs on the scenic 3.1-mile course and it was the Hillbillies claiming both the boys and girls team titles.
"Lake Erie State Park is a gorgeous place to have a cross country meet, there is no doubt about that," Vosz said. "The facilities are nice. We are able to get the kids on trails versus running across open fields and I think our kids enjoy that more, we come here to practice often. We're grateful to be able to host and get Brocton cross country started and keep working to make it stronger every year."
While West Valley's Noah Klahn was the overall winner for the boys with a blistering time of 17:34.4, Fredonia/Westfield had the next five runners cross the finish line with Trent Krenzer (19:17), Solomon McKnatt (19:27.5), Jack Fagan (19:30), Levi Kindermann (19:45.2) and Alex Cramer (20:02.8) to take the team title with a score of 15. Silver Creek/Dunkirk/Forestville's Marcus Crane (20:51.3) placed seventh overall for the Black Knights and Brocton's Michael DiLorenzo (20:51.6) claimed eighth with the Hillbillies rounding out the top 10 with Liam Simpson (20:58.1) and Danny Fagan (21:04.4).
The Brocton boys finished in second with a team score of 81 and the Black Knights were right behind them with 85.
The Hillbillies won the girls race with the low score of 22, highlighted by Meredith Lendt (21:07.7) just edging out teammate Sydney Yerico (21:08.2) for first place. Peyton Krenzer (23:08.8), Izzie Czekanski (23:09.1) and Estella Tonelli (24:32.6) rounded out the Fredonia/Westfield top five.
Silver Creek/Dunkirk/Forestville earned second with Leah Mays (21:24.4) and Emma Golembieski (22:39.9) taking third and fourth, respectively, and Leona Crane (23:58.9) placing seventh in a team score of 45.
The young Brocton girls team posted a score of 104 and Khloe Krauter (28:43.4) was the top finisher at 16th.
"It's probably going to be a few years before we're super competitive," Carr added. "But we have a great group of kids and I really hope that we continue to bring the numbers."
Also finishing in the top 10 of the girls race were Fredonia/Westfield's Mia Sells (24:48.6) and Nora Robinson (25:33) taking ninth and 10th, respectively.
