WATERFORD, Pa. -- The Wednesday Travel League held its fourth major of the season, the “Frank Borowski Invitational”, named in honor of its league founder, at The Ridge Golf Club. It marked the 100th major played since the first one was contested in 2002.
Josh Hilliker shot a new league course record 71 to win his fourth Frank Borowski Invitational title, matching Tony Nicosia for most tournament wins. Hilliker broke the previous record of 72, jointly held by Rick Manning Sr. and Kevin Kaszuba. Hilliker led both front nine (2-under par 33) and back nine (38) for his even-par 71. Both Manning and Kaszuba shot even-par 72s before changes in the course layout changed par from 72 to 71. Hilliker leads the league with eight tour wins this season and now has six total major victories.
Robert Calph finished second with 80 and Dave Franklin finished third with 82. In the B Flight, Pete Pinkoski won on a tiebreaker with Phil Hopkins and Joe Michalski. The C Flight winner was Don Kujawa. The low round by a senior was recorded by Dennis Gawronski Sr. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Pat Weaver.
Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight, Josh Hilliker (Nos. 1, 3, 10), Bob North (No. 9) and Franklin (No. 12); B Flight, Bob Kujawa (No.1), Gary Haase (Nos. 2, 13), Gawronski (No. 4), Ken Kaus (Nos. 5, 7), Tom Destro (No. 12) and Pinkoski (No. 17); C Flight, Mick Dunning Sr. (No. 1), Joe Bifaro (No. 4), John Waterman (No. 6), Don Kujawa (No. 12), Brady Hilliker (Nos. 14, 16), and Jeff Marsowicz (Nos.15, 17).
Closest to the pin were Ed Tofil (No. 2), Franklin (No. 6), 13-year-old amateur Carter Crabtree (No. 11) and Pinkoski (No.17). Winners of the Steeplechase were Crabtree (A Flight), Joe Michalski (B) and Don Kujawa (C). Winners of the par-3 contest were Josh Hilliker and Crabtree (A Flight, identical scores), Haase (B) and Weaver (C).
Top point winners were Josh Hilliker (52), and Franklin, Crabtree, Pinkoski, and Kaus (28 each). Season points leaders (after 16 events): 1. Josh Hilliker (529), 2. Tom Sacilowski (240), 3. Franklin(229), 4. Jeff Nelson (220), 5. Hopkins (185), 6. Tofil (170), 7. Mike Willoughby (168), 8. Dave Wallace and Waterman (164 each), 10.Marsowicz(162).
This week the league plays Blueberry Hill Golf Course in Russell, Pennsylvania with a late start of 11 a.m. At this time all slots are filled. Golfers can still be added to the alternate list.
On Wednesday, Sept. 9, the league will hold the “Commissioner’s Cup” at Chautauqua Golf Club’s Hill Course with a 9:30 a.m. start. The event honors the life and memory of Bruce “Java” Chrabasz. Golfers can sign up at (716) 785-2291.
