Time to capture and share Chautauqua

The NYSDEC's Conservationist magazine is inviting both amateur and professional photographers to submit their best images. Submitted photo

If you’ve ever watched the sun melt into Lake Erie from Point Gratiot, photographed an eagle soaring above the treetops near Clymer, or captured the excitement of a child landing their first fish from a Chautauqua Lake boat dock, you already know that Chautauqua County is a photographer’s dream. Every season brings new opportunities to document the beauty and adventure that define New York’s great outdoors locally.

From hikers exploring scenic forest trails and campers gathered around glowing campfires to kayakers paddling quiet waters, anglers reeling in trophy catches, sailors catching the breeze on Chautauqua Lake, and wildlife ranging from songbirds to white-tailed deer and even black bears, the county offers countless moments waiting to be preserved through a camera lens. Now is your chance to share those moments with all of New York.

Each year, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Conservationist magazine hosts its annual photography contest, inviting both amateur and professional photographers to submit their best images showcasing the Empire State’s extraordinary natural resources. The magazine is renowned for pairing breathtaking photography with engaging stories about the best places to hike, paddle, fish, observe wildlife and experience New York’s remarkable outdoor destinations.

Photographers may enter up to three images in each of three categories:

Outdoor Recreation: Staged or candid photographs of people enjoying outdoor activities or simply experiencing nature.

Wildlife: Animals, birds and insects native to New York state.

Landscapes and Scenery: Stunning images highlighting the beauty of New York’s natural landscapes.

All photographs must be taken within New York state. Entries must be submitted digitally by Sept. 8. To enter, email your image files to magazine@dec.ny.gov with “Photo Contest” in the subject line. Each submission should include the photographer’s name, mailing address and phone number. Physical photographs will not be accepted. Winning photographs will be featured in the December/January Calendar Issue of Conservationist. Winners will also receive a $100 honorarium and a one-year subscription to the magazine.

Whether your favorite image captures the quiet reflection of a misty morning on Chautauqua Lake, the thrill of a family adventure on a woodland trail, or the vibrant colors of a Lake Erie sunset, this contest is an opportunity to share the beauty of our region with readers across the state.
