Skunks shine over holiday weekend

ELMIRA — Joaquin Rodriguez-Costa collected four hits in as many at-bats and drove in five runs to highlight Jamestown’s 18-7 seven-inning victory over Elmira before 1,344 fans at Dunn Field on Sunday.

Leading 7-0 after three innings, Jamestown (19-7-1) erupted for nine runs in the top of the fourth to put the game away. Rodriguez-Costa’s banner performance, which included a double, was part of a 20-hit Tarp Skunks’ attack that included three from Branston Lindquist (double) and Jackson Enders (double), and two apiece from Grant Moore, Nate Muncy and CJ Dugan (two doubles). Eric Weeks drove in three runs, while Moore and Muncy had two RBIs apiece.

Eli Bryant (1-0), one of three Jamestown pitchers, was the winner, working the first four innings, striking out seven and walking a pair. He gave up two earned runs.

Trevor Reed, Tysan Gingerich and Manoel Essley (double) had two hits apiece for the Pioneers (12-14). Nick Spaner and Jack Alward both added doubles.

Lukas Rylander (0-1) suffered the loss.

The Tarp Skunks are off today. They return to action Tuesday when they entertain Newark at Diethrick Park. First pitch is 6:30 p.m.

TARP SKUNKS TIE NIAGARA

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. — Niagara scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game, which ended 6-6 in 10 innings before 171 fans at George Taylor Field.

Nolan Smith collected three hits in as many at-bats, while Heath Fetchik (double), Nate Muncy and Caleb Jordan all had two for the Tarp Skunks. Teammate Eric Week also had a two-bagger.

Jamestown led 6-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth, but the Ironbacks pushed across four runs to force a 6-6 deadlock.

Anderson Fenwick (double) had three hits, and Cooper Martin (double) and Carter Shin both had two for Niagara.
