OLEAN -- The Jamestown Tarp Skunks fell behind 5-0 through two innings and lost to the Olean Oilers 8-2 in Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League action Thursday at Bradner Stadium.
Now 24-9-2 on the season, Jamestown is a full game behind first-place Batavia in the West Division after the Muckdogs improved to 27-10-1 with a 9-3 win over the Auburn Doubledays on Thursday. The Tarp Skunks will travel to Olean again tonight before hosting the Geneva Red Wings on Saturday while Batavia will visit the Newark Pilots tonight and host the Niagara Falls Americans on Saturday.
Zachary McLean took the loss Thursday for Jamestown, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk while striking out two in the first inning.
The Oilers' Thomas Bates walked with one out in the first and Aidan Willard followed with a double. After a strikeout for the second out, Cooper Tarlie hit a two-run single and stole second before Jack Painter's RBI single.
Those three runs would end up being enough for Olean starter Jack Manendo, who improved to 3-2 on the season. He allowed two runs (none earned) on nine hits while striking out seven and walking one.
The Tarp Skunks' only two runs came in the top of the sixth inning. Caleb Jordan and Grant Moore hit back-to-back singles with one out. After a strikeout, Moore stole second. When the throw was errant, Jordan scored and Moore took third. Nolan Smith then hit an RBI single to make it 7-2.
Santino Musone, Nate Muncy and Kolden McCall pitched the final eight innings for Jamestown, allowing eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits and seven walks while striking out four.
Daniel Lewis got the final 10 outs for the Oilers, allowing just one hit and a walk while striking out three. Tarlie, Bates and Willard each had two hits for Olean while Conner Vercollone hit a home run.
Moore and Eric Weeks each had two hits for Jamestown while Dom Costello added a double.
