Jamestown holds off Muckdogs in 6-5 win
BATAVIA — The Jamestown Tarp Skunks were winners of their last three games heading into first-place Batavia on Monday night and they kept that going with a 6-5 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League victory over the Muckdogs at Dwyer Stadium.
After trading blows, Jamestown earned the lead for good in the fifth inning after an opening out was followed by four straight hits that resulted in two runs. Nolan Smith singled and Anthony Trommer doubled putting runners in scoring position. Jamestown immediately cashed in with back-to-back RBI singles from Dom Costello and CJ Dugan for the 5-3 lead.
The damage could have been worse as Batavia walked the bases loaded with two outs, but managed to escape only trailing 5-3.
Jamestown added another insurance run in the top of the seventh with Dugan doubling and Branston Lindquist knocking him home with an RBI double that set the final score of 6-3.
Zachary McLean started off things strong for the Tarp Skunks on the bump and the bullpen didn’t let him down with Chase Beran and Collin Pence keeping the Muckdogs at bay until a close ninth inning. McLean was dinged for four hits and two walks with two earned runs, but he mowed down 10 Muckdogs via strikeout before leaving after six innings of work.
Beran was nearly perfect in his only inning and Pence matched that in the eighth, but in the bottom of the ninth the Muckdogs threatened after the first two batters reached and scored. However, Pence locked in after hitting the first batter and giving up an RBI triple to James Quintero. He gave up an RBI groundout and then put down the final two batters to hold on for the win.
Jamestown outhit Batavia 13-5 and built a lead off the performances of Smith going 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, Trommer finished 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored, Dugan went 2 for 5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, and Lindquist finished 2 for 3 with an RBI double.
Batavia was led by Braedon Reina going 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Gavin Chandler took the loss on the mound giving up 10 hits, three walks and four earned runs in five innings of work.
Jamestown (24-7-2) returns home in a rematch on Wednesday against Batavia (24-7-1), while the Muckdogs are in action tonight at Niagara Falls.
