Rizzo's drive leads Falconer to 3-0 record

FALCONER — Dominick Rizzo, Falconer’s fourth batter of the game, hit a grand slam and his team never looked back en route to an 18-0 win over Interstate in the District 38 Little League 10-12 Area B tournament Wednesday.

Falconer (3-0) pounded out 12 hits in just three trips to the plate. Jayce Stewart led the way with three hits, including a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Andrew Youngberg had two hits, including a double, and two runs scored while Ayden Faulkner also had two hits and two RBIs.

Stewart needed just 32 pitches to get through three innings on the mound, allowing just a single to Karter Bender. Stewart struck out four and walked none.

Drew Maggio, Lincoln Moller and Kasen Hill combined for five strikeouts on the mound for Interstate (2-1).

Falconer hosts Southwestern on Monday night with a chance to lock up first place in Area B while Interstate has its bye that night before hosting Southwestern in a makeup game next Wednesday.

SOUTHWESTERN 9, GOWANDA 3

LAKEWOOD — Southwestern had just three hits, but took advantage of eight walks and five errors to beat Gowanda 9-3 in Area B action.

Gianni Scholeno singled and drove in a pair of runs, Mason Winchester singled and scored a run and Carter Ray had a single for Southwestern (2-0). On the mound, Ray, Matthew Cama and Winchester combined on a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

For Gowanda (0-3), Everett Gernatt had two hits, including a double, while Bryson Olszewski, Odin McMahon and Derrick Goode also had singles. Aidrick Pagan, Jase Bylbie, Jacobi Davis and Jayce Hubbard combined for nine strikeouts on the mound.

Southwestern will visit Falconer on Monday night while Gowanda will host Valley that same night.

FREDONIA 12, DUNKIRK 4

FREDONIA — Fredonia improved to 3-0 with a 12-4 win over Dunkirk in the Area A tournament.

A three-run first inning and a six-run third inning gave Fredonia a 9-1 lead.

Tristan Darr led Fredonia with a double, a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored. Riley Sciarrino went 3 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Sebastian Cerrie doubled twice and drove in a run; Bruno Muscarella had two hits, including a double, an RBI and a run scored; Rocco Bongiovanni doubled, drove in two runs and scored twice; and Dominic Carapella had two hits, an RBI and two runs scored.

On the mound, Carapella and Muscarella combined on a six-hitter with nine strikeouts.

For Dunkirk (1-2), Paxton Sheehan and Tyler Kuras each had a pair of hits while Louie Dolce added a double.

Fredonia will visit Mayville on Monday with first place in Area A on the line while Dunkirk will host Westfield that same night.

HANOVER 4, MAYVILLE 2

MAYVILLE — Brantley Griewisch tossed a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts and two walks as Hanover beat Mayville 4-2 in Area A action.

At the plate, Griewisch went 3 for 3 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored; Zachary Wicks was 3 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs; Jack Caughel went 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored; and Declan Schauer added two hits for Hanover (2-2).

Ethan Langer’s double was the lone hit for Mayville (2-1). Cheston Wright and Langer combined for 10 strikeouts on the mound.

Mayville will host Fredonia on Monday night while Hanover awaits that result to see if it has done enough to advance to the semifinals.
