Fredonia trap season was a fine one

The Fredonia Central School trap team recently completed its spring season with the USA Clay Target League.
The team consisted of 17 students and competed in an 11-week season that began in March. Students met twice a week for practice and competition. Students continued to improve throughout the season, especially with weekly Anne Oakley competitions at extended distances. Fredonia took fourth place in its conference for the regular season.
The individual female awards included: first place, Chelsea Pierce; second place, Olivia Balch; and third place, Lucie Katta. Male awards included: first place, Mason Tomaszewski; second place tie Garrett Lesch and Thane Turo; and third place, Aidan Kinney. The most-improved award went to Evan Cook.
Eight students competed at the Western New York high school trap competition in Alden on May 30. A total of 13 schools competed totaling 25 squads. Chelsea Pierce took fifth-place female with the team taking third place for the day.
At the state competition, Fredonia competed among 79 schools with a varsity, junior varsity and individual divisions. The varsity squad ranked seventh while the junior varsity squad received a second-place trophy.
Aidan Kinney, Chelsea Pierce, and Thane Turo continued their season by competing in the national tournament in Mason, Michigan from July 8-12.
These students competed on an individual basis against 1,800 students on 44 trap fields. On the first day of practice, all three students shot 25 straight birds and received Michigan Trap Association patches. Individual competition culminated on July 11 with Pierce scoring 93, Kinney 90 with 25 straight, and Turo 86 out of 100 birds. These students were very close to entering the championship round that required 95 out of 100 birds
