Fredonia suffers heartbreaking loss

Softball team falls 3-2 to Stony Point on Long Island

ST. JAMES — Fredonia was one strike away from improving to 2-0 at the New York State Little League Softball Tournament on Wednesday evening.

Now the District 38 champions are a loss away from being eliminated.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Stony Point strung together back-to-back walks before Francesca Richards hit a walk-off, two-run double to send the District 18 champions to a 3-2 victory and a 2-0 record in the winner’s bracket.

Fredonia, which beat Tri-County 11-0 in its opening game Tuesday, fell to 1-1.

Fredonia, which managed just one hit in the game, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Avery Stellrecht was hit by a pitch with one out, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a two-out wild pitch.

Fredonia took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Callie Tramuta walked to open the inning and went all the way to third on Kara Harrington’s groundout for the first out of the inning. After a strikeout, Adrianna Dimitri walked. Then, on the first pitch to Grace Sobotka, Tramuta scored on a passed ball.

That lead held up until the sixth, when Stony Point pulled out the victory.

Harrington threw a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts and four walks in the circle for Fredonia. She also singled for the team’s only hit.

Now in the loser’s bracket, Fredonia will take on Downtown Little League of Manhattan at 3 p.m. today. With a win, the team would play again at 5:30. A loss would eliminate them from the tournament.

Joe Stellrecht, the team’s manager, has set up a GoFundMe at https://gofund.me/ed76da7d5 to help offset the team’s costs of participating in the state tournament.

TUESDAY

Fredonia got its tournament experience off on the right foot Tuesday afternoon with an 11-0 four-inning victory over Tri-County of the Syracuse area.

Harrington tossed a no-hitter with eight strikeouts and two walks in the circle for Fredonia, which scored four runs in the first inning, five more in the second and two more in the third.

In the first, Raelyn Korzeniewski led off with a walk, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on an error. Avery Stellrecht followed with a single and stole second before Tramuta walked. Harrington was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Natalia Sebzda’s RBI groundout. After a walk to Dimitri loaded the bases again, Tri-County picked up a strikeout for the second out, but a dropped flyball allowed two more Fredonia runs to score before the inning was over.

In the second, Korzeniewski tripled with one out and Stellrecht walked before Korzeniewski scored on a double-steal. Tramuta hit an RBI triple and Harrington hit an RBI double ahead of Sebzda’s walk. After courtesy runner Macy Skubis scored on a groundout, Sebzda scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-0.

Fredonia’s final two runs in the third came when Korzeniewski walked with two outs, Avery Stellrecht hit an RBI triple and Tramuta hit an RBI double.

Harrington struck out the side in the first inning; struck out the final two batters of the second inning; pitched around a pair of walks in the third inning; and retired the side in order in the fourth inning.
