Salvaggio tied for 27th, Wintersteen tied for 21st after Day 1

CHURCHVILLE — Jamestown’s Tyler Salvaggio sits in a tie for 27th place at plus-5 after the opening round of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Golf Championships, held Sunday at Mill Creek Golf Club.

Starting at No. 1, Salvaggio remained at par through No. 6 with four pars, a bogey at No. 3 and a birdie at No. 4. The Red & Green senior then double-bogeyed No. 7, birdied No. 8 and bogeyed No. 9 to finish his first nine holes at plus-2. Bogeys at Nos. 10, 15 and 17 gave him a 78 for the day.

Fredonia’s Ryan Kelly is a shot back of Salvaggio in a tie for 31st at 6-over. The Hillbillies senior started at No. 10 and birdied No. 14 before bogeys at Nos. 10, 16 and 18, and a double-bogey at No. 17. On the front nine, Kelly made birdies at Nos. 5 and 8, but bogeyed Nos. 4 and 9.

Jamestown’s Evan Maloney is a shot back of Kelly at 7-over, in a tie for 41st. Starting at No. 10, Maloney made bogeys at Nos. 10, 12, 13, 16 and 17. On the front nine, he birdied No. 2 and bogeyed No. 3 before an eagle at No. 5. Two bogeys and a double-bogey after that left him with a 78.

Randolph’s Cody Slade, the final Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association qualifier, finished Day 1 in a tie for 93rd at 19-over. He made five bogeys and finished six other holes at double-bogey or worse.

Josh Yan of Section IX Newburgh Free Academy is the Day 1 leader after a 4-under 67. Brayden Sentz of Section III Cooperstown is at 3-under while Charles Nevin of Section VIII Friends Academy and Brayden Thomas of Section III Jamesville-Dewitt are 2-under. A group of four golfers sits at 1-under.

The first tee time for today’s final round is 7:30 a.m.

GIRLS

RUSH — Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove’s Jocelyn Wintersteen is tied for 21st after the opening round of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Girls Golf Championships, held Sunday at Wild Wood Country Club.

Wintersteen finished with an 8-over 80. Starting at No. 1, the Cougars junior double-bogeyed No. 1 and bogeyed Nos. 5 and 8 for a front-nine 41. On the back nine, she bogeyed Nos. 10, 11, 12, 13 and 16 before ending her day with a birdie at No. 18 for an 80.

Cattaraugus-Little Valley’s Emma Barcellini is tied with Wintersteen at 8-over. After a triple-bogey at No. 1, she birdied No. 2, but ended the front nine with back-to-back bogeys for a 41. On the back nine, Barcellini birdied No. 13 before back-to-back double-bogeys and a bogey to finish her day.

Fredonia’s Sydnee Hoffman is tied for 81st after an opening-round 95. She made five pars, five bogeys and finished the other eight holes at double-bogey or worse.

Rachel O’Rourke of Section III Rome Free Academy is the only golfer under par at 1-under with a 71. Hayden Knapp of Section II South Glens Falls sits in second place with an even-par 72.

Golf will get underway with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. today.
