Winchester tosses 1-hitter as Southwestern beats Valley

LAKEWOOD — Mason Winchester threw a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts to lead Southwestern to a 7-0 win over Valley in the opening game of the District 38 Area B 10-12 Little League tournament Monday at LaGrega Field.

Southwestern (1-0) scored all seven of its runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Carter Ray had two hits, including a double, two RBIs and a run scored; Gianni Scholeno doubled, drove in a run and scored a run; Dominick Burkholder singled, drove in two runs and scored a run; and Mason Brown singled and scored a run for Southwestern.

Luke Smallback had the lone hit for Valley (0-1) with a single in the second inning. Jay Martin and Barrett Austin combined on a five-hitter with four strikeouts on the mound.

Valley will host Interstate on Wednesday in Gerry while Southwestern will travel to Interstate next Monday.

INTERSTATE 5, GOWANDA 1

FREWSBURG — Kasen Hill allowed two hits over 5 1-3 innings while striking out 11 as Interstate beat Gowanda 5-1.

Hill helped his own cause with a pair of hits, an RBI and a run scored while Max Labart, Lincoln Moller and Owen Henderson each added a hit for Interstate. Drew Maggio drove in a run.

For Gowanda (0-1), Bryson Olszewski, Everett Gernatt and Bryant Sanchez each had a hit.

Gowanda will host Falconer on Wednesday while Interstate will take on Valley in Gerry that same night.

FREDONIA 15, WESTFIELD 0

FREDONIA — Fredonia defeated Westfield 15-0 on opening night of the Division 38 Area A 10-12 Little League tournament Monday.

Bruno Muscarella and Dominic Carapella combined for a no-hitter with six strikeouts, surrendering only one walk. At the plate, Muscarella had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs; Carter Long had two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs; Riley Sciarrino and Coleman Brown doubled; and Rocco Bongiovanni, Tristan Darr and Mason Switzer singled.

Westfield (0-1) will host Hanover on Wednesday. Fredonia (1-0) will travel to Hanover next Monday.

DUNKIRK 20, HANOVER 9

SILVER CREEK — Dunkirk broke open a 7-7 game with a 13-run top of the seventh inning that included a two-run double from James Maldonado-Gilbert to beat Hanover 20-9.

Tyler Kuras, Louie Dolce and Maldonado-Gilbert combined for 14 strikeouts on the mound for Dunkirk (1-0). Paxton Sheehan had two of Dunkirk’s six hits. Alexavier Santiago walked three times and scored three runs while Juelious Soto walked twice and scored a pair of runs.

Brantley Griewisch went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored; Brandon Hernandez had two hits and two runs scored; and Zachary Wicks also had two hits and an RBI for Hanover (0-1). Karter Johnson had a hit and drove in a pair of runs. Hernandez, Griewisch, Wicks and Declan Schauer combined for 13 strikeouts on the mound.

Dunkirk will host Mayville on Wednesday while Hanover will travel to Westfield.
