Hannah Melquist was surrounded by talent in the Falconer batting order.
It could’ve been hard for her to stand out among her teammates, three of whom were Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 4 First-Team all-stars themselves.
And yet, she proved to be the best.
Batting cleanup for the Section VI Class C champions, the left-handed hitter led the team in on base-plus slugging percentage (1.418) – generally used as a tool to measure the best all-around hitters – and slugging percentage (.867). The senior also led the Golden Falcons in hits (37), triples (3), home runs (4), RBIs (34) and runs scored (34). She was second in batting average (.493) and doubles (10) while also committing just one error all season at first base.
Melquist opened her season with a single, two RBIs and two runs scored in a 16-0 nonleague win over Olean before going 3 for 5 with her first home run of the season and four RBIs in a 14-3 victory over nonleague Maple Grove 11 days later.
To open the Division 4 schedule two days later, Melquist went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs in a 3-1 win over Portville. Against Gowanda on April 18, she went 2 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs in a 9-4 win that saw her OPS jump to a season-high 1.647 as well as her batting average to reach a season-high .571.
In a doubleheader April 30 at North Collins, Melquist went a combined 4 for 8 with a triple, three home runs and eight RBIs to lead Falconer to wins of 15-0 and 14-6. But her batting average fell to a season-low .394 after the first game of that twinbill.
Undeterred, Melquist went back to work. Four days later, she went 4 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored in a 6-0 league shutout of Portville that pushed her average back up to .488 and her OPS up to 1.470.
Melquist finished the regular season with a .474 average after a 2-for-2 day that included a pair of doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored against Frewsburg on May 19.
In Falconer’s sectional playoff-opening 7-0 shutout of Ellicottville – which had beaten the Golden Falcons for the league title – Melquist went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Five days later, in a 4-3 semifinal victory over Wilson, she went 2 for 4 with a double, a triple, an RBI and a run scored. Then, in the sectional final, Melquist was 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored as Falconer locked up its first title since going back to back in 2021 and 2022 with a 12-7 win over Barker.
In the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C Far West Subregional against Caledonia-Mumford, Melquist was 3 for 4 with a double and three runs scored to lead the Golden Falcons to a 9-4 victory before they lost two days later in the state quarterfinals.
For standing out in a lineup of stars and anchoring one of the finest infield defenses in the area with her ability and leadership, Melquist is the 2026 Post-Journal/OBSERVER Softball Player of the Year.
