Kelly’s 77 leads Uncle Buck Classic

CHAUTAUQUA — The Wednesday Travel League held its fifth annual “Uncle Buck Classic” on Chautauqua Golf Club’s Lake Course. Beginning this year, the event has merged with the “New York Open,” one of the league’s majors, and will be henceforth known as the “Uncle Buck New York Open.” The event honors the life and memory of longtime league member and organizer Edward “Butch” Mackowiak. Several members of Mackowiak’s family were in attendance for the event.
Brad Kelly was the overall winner, posting the low round of 77. Josh Hilliker was second with 80 and Dale White was third with 82. Kelly and Hilliker led the front nine with 37s. White led the back nine with 39, even with a triple-double.
Besides A Flight winner Kelly, other flight winners were John Waterman (B), Bob Kujawa (C) and Mike Willoughby (D). Each flight winner was a recipient of a coveted “Uncle Buck Classic Hat,” designed by Cheryl Gawronski. Bob Kujawa was also this year’s winner of the New York Open Statue of Liberty trophy, originally donated by Butch Mackowiak. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Hastings Fava.
Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Kelly (No. 1), Joe Michalski (No. 2), Hilliker (No. 5, eagle and No. 12); Tom Sacilowski (No. 8) and White (No. 16); B Flight — Phil Hopkins (No. 2), Adam Gornikiewicz (No. 3) and Tom Destro (Nos. 10 and 11); C Flight — Jack Fish (No. 4), Ken Kaus (No. 5), Pete Pinkoski (No. 8) and Kujawa (Nos. 16 and 17); D Flight — Gary Richardson (No. 1), Willoughby (Nos. 4 and 15), Bryan McCarthy (Nos. 5 and 18), Katie Michalak (No. 13) and Drew Lapointe (No. 14).
Closest to the pin were: Jeff Nelson (No. 4), Gornikiewicz (No. 6), Sacilowski (Nos. 8 and 15) and Hilliker (No. 12). Winners of the Steeplechase were: Kelly (A Flight), Waterman (B), Jim Fafinski (C) and Willoughby (D). Winners of the Par 3 contest were Hilliker (A), Jason Habich (B), Mick Dunning Sr. (C) and Willoughby (D).
Top point winners were: Sacilowski (64), Hilliker (56), Willoughby (36) and Pinkoski (32). Season points leaders (through 6 events): 1. Hilliker (208), 2. Sacilowski (132), 3. Nelson (77), 4. Pinkoski (71), 5. Ed Tofil (66), 6. Hopkins (64), 7. Willoughby (58), 8. Jeff Marsowicz (50), 9. Bob North (42), 10. Kujawa (40).
Josh Hilliker moved past Mike Wolfe for 11th place on the All-Time Points List. Pete Pinkoski reached 1,500 career points. Hilliker’s eagle was the fourth of his Travel League career, second most all-time with Robert Calph.
This week the league plays South Hills Country Club with a 10 a.m. start. At this time, all spots are filled. Golfers can still be placed on the sub/call list.
